SUPERAMA

I have seen many great things during my first week here in Mexico, but I really feel the need to share the story of my trip to Superama....

It has been raining a lot here this week. Rosa says the weather is usually not like this... I hope she´s right and the sun will come out soon because the rain is making it difficult for us to go anywhere in the afternoon. Yesterday, since it was raining so much and everything to do here is outside, I decided I would put on my rain coat and walk to Superama, which is about half a mile from where I am living. My first adventure out on my own, without one of my completly fluent sidekicks... (Don´t worry Mom... it is completly safe to walk around Cuernavaca during the day... ) Most of the stores in Cuernavaca are tiny, locally owned tiendas (stores) or farmacias. And then there is Superama.... Superama is owned by Walmart, and that is pretty much what it is... Walmart. Now, I know some of you (i.e. Robby) are cringing already... I myself haven´t set foot inside a Walmart in about 5 years, but there are some things here that you can only get at the megastore... so I had no choice. One of the things I needed to get was a calling card (the one I bought in the United States doesn´t work here in Mexico... go figure.) That tured out to be much more difficult of a task than would be expected, but finally, I thought I figured out which card I needed. I got a few more things and I was on my way. On my way out a little 4 year old girl came up to me and asked me my name, and we started talking. Maybe it's because I teach children, or maybe it's because they speak slowly, but that was the best conversation I have had in Spanish since I got here! I began walking out of the store with a big smile on my face, feeling good about my new little friend when all of a sudden, SMACK! (That's right Bethany... "I pulled and Erin") I walked straight into the sliding glass door... full speed face plant into the glass! Ugh... For those of you who have been to Mexico, you know that not many of the buildings have doors that shut during the day. All of the stores are wide open into the streets, so I guess I just assumed that Superrama was the same way... Boy was I wrong.

Oh, and that same afternoon I got pooped on by a pidgeon!

But anyway... I don't mean to just share my not so positive experience... but I know there are are few of you who can completly appreciate that story. Really, for the most part I am enjoying myself and avoiding injuries!

Hola mi amiga. Do you remember when you tripped by the pool in Cancun? Gotta love it! No worries, I fell behind the bar at Claddagh while carrying a big salad on Wednesday...I saved the salad. How embarassing...but life goes on! Sounds like you're having a wonderful experience so far. Prior to reading your blog my first thought was, "I wonder if Erin is eating meat?" Question answered, but don't worry you're forgiven! I'll do my best to eat very little meat to compensate for your consumption. Love and miss you.
